Design Process

An iterative design Process utilizing the ADDIE model allowed for check-ins with stakeholders before each progression to ensure clarity and progress within the process.

Design Process

An iterative design process showcases the changes from course outline to content design, including the edits made within the course development process to condense content into smaller segments to decrease cognitive overload.

Image Development

Using Adobe Illustrator and Canva, the chosen images are crafted to create a cohesive modern aesthetic. The color scheme adheres to Charlotte's brand identity guidelines and fosters diversity through graphics that represent the university's demographics. Throughout the design process, placeholders were developed to give stakeholders glimpse of the design possibilities.

Development of Visual Aids to Support Learning &  Engagement

Visuals such as flowcharts, animated summaries, and infographics were designed to reduce cognitive overload from dense text and enhance comprehension.

The first graphic was created to clarify nursing locations and standard procedures.

The 2nd graphic aims to illustrate course workflow and outlines course topics.

Intention of Interactions

Interactions were implemented that aim to engage the learner.  Interactions focused on offering a diverse range of activities that align with content presented. The goal was to create an engaging e-learning tool and move away from passive learnng.

In the given examples, the interactions are intended to enhance the learners' understanding while creating active learning.

Multimedia Development

Animations created in Vyond were used to provide visual support among extensive text, minimizing cognitive overload and improving information retention in realistic action scenes.

Throughout the course, two videos were produced to facilitate learning: the first welcomes participants, and the second clarifies the calculation of leave, the most intricate topic in the course. The voice principle, combined with the personalization principle, contributes to interaction.

Diversity and Inclusion

The participants highlighted in the course were intentionally selected to represent the diverse and inclusive community of UNC Charlotte. This course not only addresses the representation of different races and cultures but also seeks to encompass various family structures and family planning options, including surrogacy and adoption.

Implementation

Test Run

  • Test Run was completed with a total of 7 participants.

  • Particpants included both birthing and non birthing parents

  • Of the participants that completed the course, all participants scored at least an 80% in their final course summary.

  • When identifying actions to take before leave, 5/7 participants could identify all 5 correct steps.

  • 100% of participants could identify the laws associated with the  Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, FMLA Maternity Leave, and FMLA Bonding Time.

  • Employers understood whom to contact for questions regarding parental leave.

Final implementation

Due to policy and personnel changes within the department, the course is currently stalled.

Full implementation is aimed to continue by the end of 2025.

Reflection

The Test Run was conducted with feedback from my colleagues and peers. In hindsight, I wish I had included male participants to gain a broader range of insights about the course. While designing the course, I realized I needed more time to focus on improving my skills in content design and citation when sharing information with stakeholders.

As I reflect on this experience, I am committed to enhancing these abilities moving forward. Given that this was my first experience applying instructional design concepts, I recognize that asking more questions could have reduced the number of meetings with stakeholders and the need for content revisions.

Overall, I am pleased with the design and development of this course, especially considering that I completed several components independently over a 12-week process. By aligning the course with stakeholder needs, developing the content, and implementing it, I was able to grow as a designer, identify areas for improvement, and recognize my strengths.
